Miley Cyrus Reportedly ‘Butting Heads’ with Her Mom Too After She & Her Dad Stopped Speaking for Years—There’s ‘Resentment & Tension’
The recent Hannah Montana reunion has put Miley Cyrus and her complicated family drama back in the spotlight. The reunion featured her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, who played her dad on the show as well. But Billy Ray was very much absent from the premiere amid reports that Miley asked him not to bring his girlfriend, Elizabeth Hurley.
Yes, ever since Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus divorced, their kids have pretty much been picking sides. It even caused a rift between Miley and her father for years, which has recently been repaired. And that desire on Miley’s part to make peace with her father is, apparently, now causing problems with her mother.

The National Enquirer reported that, “Tish is very hateful toward Billy Ray. She says he’s a total con man and a scumbag, who’s messed up countless lives through his own selfishness, cruelty and narcissism,” according to a source. “She doesn’t understand why Miley’s so blind to it!”
After the divorce, Billy Ray married Aussie singer Firerose. The two later divorced. Tish, meanwhile, also remarried, to actor Dominic Purcell.
Now, Billy Ray is reportedly trying to make amends with his family, but Tish isn’t so forgiving. “Tish’s view is that what he’s done in the past is unforgivable; she wants no part of him,” a source says. “She’s finally with a life partner who treats her right and is a kind-hearted gentleman who doesn’t go out of his way to hurt others like Billy Ray did.”
Miley’s siblings are reportedly also looking for a reconciliation for the family. “There’s a lot of resentment and tension,” a source said. “Miley and Tish are butting heads — big-time. Both of them are really digging in.”
Billy Ray has previously spoken about how starring in Hannah Montana alongside his daughter Miley wasn’t the best thing for their relationship. He told GQ in 2011 that, two years in, things got really complicated.
“The business was driving a wedge between us,” he said. “How many interviews did I give and say, ‘You know what’s important between me and Miley is I try to be a friend to my kids’? I said it a lot. And sometimes I would even read other parents might say, ‘You don’t need to be a friend, you need to be a parent.’ Well, I’m the first guy to say to them right now: You were right.”
Father and daughter later became estranged after Billy Ray and Tish divorced. But things got better in 2025. During an interview with The New York Times, Miley said, “As I’ve gotten older, I’m respecting my parents as individuals instead of as parents—because my mom’s really loved my dad for her whole life, and I think being married to someone in the music industry and not being a part of it is obviously really hard,” Miley explained. “And so I think I took on some of my mom’s hurt as my own because it hurt her more than it hurt me as an adult, and so I owned a lot of her pain.”
Later, she addressed the family divide in the podcast Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky, saying, “My family and I have had a really difficult, you know, what did you call your decade? Dark decade. Yeah, we had one of those,” Miley said. “Half of us weren’t speaking to each other at one point, and we cleaned all that up. That was a really important part of my year this year, was all of my family putting those lines of communication back together. A lot because of, you know, I had a lot of loyalty to my mom, the way that families do when parents get divorced.”
